Remote Consultation at Mammoth Orthopedic Institute

When should I consider a remote consultation?

Decisions pertaining to your healthcare are some of the most important that you will make. Orthopaedic ailments can have a significant effect on one’s quality of life; knee or shoulder pain can inhibit everyday activities, ranging from walking, to reaching for something on a high shelf, to something as simple as sleeping. Whether you only wish to return to these daily activities, are a weekend warrior, or want to resume a life of elite athletic ability, you should feel well informed and have carefully considered your treatment plan.

You may be wondering if you are a candidate for a certain procedure or treatment or you may be seeking a “second opinion” regarding your injury or ailment. In this case, a discussion with another physician can be valuable to confirm the diagnosis, review treatment options, or perhaps even catch something that was not seen during the first evaluation. This is a relatively common practice, and it is unlikely that a physician would object to this.

Do I need a referral?

In a vast majority of cases, no referral is needed to be seen at the Mammoth Orthopedic Institute.

What is the cost of a remote consultation?

An initial review of your records and a phone consultation is performed without charge. If you proceed with seeking care at MOI standard medical costs apply.

Most insurance plans are accepted at the Mammoth Orthopedic Institute. However, if you have an HMO insurance plan, you will need special approval from your insurance company prior to an in-person appointment or surgery. Out of pocket costs will vary, depending on your insurance plan.

What if surgery is required, but I do not live in the area?

The need for surgical intervention can often be evaluated by thoroughly discussing a history of the injury and symptoms, reviewing the medical records, and reviewing the imaging studies. If surgical intervention is decided upon and you would like to proceed with surgery here in Mammoth, an appointment will be made prior to surgery to meet your surgeon in person to perform a detailed examination and review your records. Much of your follow up care can be done remotely, your results are tracked with an online database, and a referral to a physical therapist local to you can be made.

In most cases, surgery can be performed on a same day (outpatient) basis. Patients are encouraged to remain in Mammoth Lakes for 1-2 days to ensure a smooth transition. In most cases an early postoperative visit with your team and/or physical therapy occurs within 1-2 days after surgery and prior to you returning home to review instructions, and ensure your comfort and safety.

As we do have many visitors here in the Mammoth Lakes area, we are experienced in treating patients who do not live locally.
